Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I be advanced?

The advance amount is uniquely calculated for each individual who is qualified to use the service. The following amounts are currently available for prepaid electricity advances: R20, R30, and R50 (inclusive of associated service fees).

How can I increase my limit?

The more you use the Umhlakasi service and make advances, the more your eligibility will increase.

What is a service fee?

This is the fee charged per advance so we can give the customer access the service. The fee is only applicable if the customer chooses to take an advance. The fee is currently set at R5 per advance.

How do I repay my advance?

To top up your electricity meter, use any of our Umhlakasi Approved channels, including Spar, Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Flash, Kazang, our website at saceditclear.co.za, or your banking app. Any outstanding advances will be automatically deducted from your next meter recharge. Once you’ve repaid the full outstanding advance, you’ll be eligible to take another advance.

Why was my token generated for less than my eligible advance amount?

The admin fee would have been deducted prior to offering the token.

How can I take out more than one advance at a time?

Only one advance may be taken at a time. You will need to repay your previous advance in full before you will become eligible to take another advance.

Why did my recharge say I’ve repaid a Umhlakasi Advance when I did not take one?

Someone else in your household may have an outstanding advance associated with your meter. Please note that your next electricity top up will first be used to repay the outstanding Umhlakasi amounts associated with that meter. This means that older advances will be repaid first, regardless of who took the advance. All outstanding advance amounts need to be repaid before any new electricity tokens are issued.

Why can’t I take out an advance, but I could before?

There are two possible reasons for this: (1) You have outstanding advances that need to be repaid in full before you can take a new one; or (2) You are no longer eligible for the Umhlakasi service. This means you have not been making regular transactions with your cellphone number and are therefore no longer eligible. For more information, please refer to the question ‘How do I become eligible for Umhlakasi?’ This may also be due to a default on your repayment of a previous advance, meaning you are no longer eligible for the Umhlakasi service.

Why do I keep getting errors when trying to repay my advance?

This may be the result of connectivity issues with municipal systems, or with the Umhlakasi service itself. For more information, please contact [email protected]

Why is my token not generating?

This may be because your municipality has disabled the Umhlakasi service. Umhlakasi is unavailable in the following municipalities: Midvaal, Umlathuze, Breede Valley, George, Sol Plaatjies, Oudtshoorn, Overstrand, Cape Agulhas, Prestige, Prepaid World, Centlec, Witzenberg, Drakenstein, Ontec, Stellenbosch, and Syntell.

Where can I get my last token?

You can easily reach out to us on WhatsApp to request your last token, or you can retrieve it using USSD by following these steps: 1. Dial *120*1608# on your cellphone. 2. Select option 4 to view your transaction history. Alternatively, you can check your tokens on our website. Click on “Take an Advance,” follow the login process, select your meter number, and then press “Tokens.”
